The first measure defines the concept behind Short. This is an exploration in opposites: short phrases contrasted with phrases that are a little too long; short notes played adjacent to long notes; short rhythms layered over longer extensions of the same rhythm, legato ideas re-worked into their staccato counterparts.
Technically, Short is probably the easiest piece yet produced for the Abstractions Series, but it requires steadfast concentration and control over minute differences in technique to deliver the intended range of "shortness." Where else will you find engraved expressions like "Gradually Shorten Staccato." Short is not only defined by its opposite, but by degree.
Like the other compositions in this Series, Short is not just an expression of technique or mood, but of ideas that have their counterparts in language, literature and art.
