Push
Brass Quartet
Push is a lively piece with staccato rhythms and fat chords. The score is written for one trumpet and 3 French horns, with optional transposition of the 3rd Horn part to trombone or baritone/euphonium. It's also possible for the 1st and 2nd horn parts to be played on the variety of French horns currently used in marching bands. The performance length is approximately 4:45 minutes, with possible edits for use as an encore piece.
Push is not glaringly difficult, abstract in tonality or form, overflowing with dynamics to the extreme, or a challenge to endurance and range. But it does require precision and concentration. Blending of chords and articulation patterns are the key to a successful performance.
Push is a rhythmically driving piece from start to finish. The chord structure, rhythms and dynamics build in long, layered lines. Meters shift from 4:4 to 3:4 to 5:4. Right from the start the push begins. At the end, the sense of urgency and the building patterns are washed away with sustained chords as the pallet is cleansed.
