Hopscotch
--Animated Version

Hopscotch is scored for brass sextet, involving 1 piccolo trumpet, 1 muted trumpet, 2 French horns, 1 baritone/trombone and 1 tuba. An MP3 file of the score is being played with the animation program on the left.

All of the images in this animation of Hopscotch are based on letters from a font library. For example, straight lines can be the letter "I," circles the letter "O," etc. To make an oval out of an "O" the length or width of the letter is stretched. Different font faces yield different shapes, and by linking shapes together across several fonts familes it is possible to construct almost any object.

The placement of each letter (or shape) is determined by standard X/Y coordinates. The movement on and off the screen is determined by a variety of "fade-on" commands common to almost any Flash program.

The reason fonts were used to create this animation is because fonts are vectored objects that have small files. Manipulating font characters on an X/Y grid is accomplished by numerous word processing and animation programs.

The disadvantage of using a font program as an animation platform lies in the editing techniques. A font program, even a front program with built-in animation, was never intended to accomplish lengthy animation projects synchronized to multiple music cues over an extended length of time. Building Hopscotch took weeks instead of hours simply because the program had to be run from the start every time a correction or addition was made. For example, to see the results of a simple change at 1:10 second, you had to review the program starting from 0:00, i.e. the beginning, instead of starting at 1:05 seconds into the program. Editing was a very tedious process. Never again will I use a font-based program to develop animation for a piece of music.
